INTERNATIONAL CONSULTATION ON THE PLANNING AND DESIGN OF CHISHI RIVERSIDE SHENSHAN SPECIAL COOPERATION ZONE

RIVERWORKS describes our ambition to reinstate the dynamic river and estuary as spine of a new urban and natural landscape. RIVERWORKS is about design and planning, but it is also about initiating a long-term commitment - a strategic, collaborative, ambitious, incremental process to reshape a watershed.

Our team of landscape architects, urban designers, architects, planners, ecologists, economists, hydrologists, and engineers propose to once again make room for the river's varied flows and tidal cycles. We will seek effective, science-based ways of restoring natural habitat and enhancing the rich and productive landscapes throughout the watershed. We will describe new possibilities for bringing people into these landscapes once again.

The April-September monsoons should be a time to celebrate the lush waterways, not to repair from flood damage. We propose to protect and restore the positive hydrological cycles of the river system, and to allow the branches and tributaries of the ChiShi river to infiltrate the adjacent urban areas to buffer against floods and integrate into an urban ecological system. We imagine an organized patchwork of organic, sensitively planned urban developments that respond to the waterway’s unique topography — balancing agriculture, park lands, old and new communities, institutions and research centers, suitable commerce, environmentally-oriented industry, and recreational spaces. We imagine a process that starts not with excavators and dump-trucks, but one that begins with investments in existing settlements, cultural heritage, ancient practices, and the abundant natural landscape surrounding the site.
