Hong Kong boasts over 500 Sitting-out Areas and Rest Gardens in its urbanized territory, ranging from 50-7,000 sqm. These compact public spaces, part of the city's official open-space network, have a tangible impact on adjacent communities and the broader political, economic, and environmental relationships due to their ubiquity and uniformity.
"Sitting-out Area" refers to a small public space with seating in urban areas for outdoor relaxation. In Cantonese, they're called saam kok see hang, or "three-cornered shit-pit," acknowledging their marginal status among city open spaces.
A discussion about cities as ecosystems is growing, where urban and natural systems intertwine and hybridize. In this context, small-scale, opportunistic, networked open spaces, like Hong Kong's Sitting-out Areas and Rest Gardens, have emerged.
City planners value these small green spaces for their environmental, economic, and health benefits. They reduce urban heat island effects, improve a city's ecological impact, and positively affect property values, walkability, and social well-being.
Small public open-space interventions can serve as urban renewal tools, potentially diverting public space and investment for private gain, erasing prior ecological or social value. Hong Kong's Sitting-out Areas can be assessed and critiqued on these dimensions.
Hong Kong's Sitting-out Areas result from an ad-hoc bureaucratic process. While they contribute to the city's overall green-space allocation guidelines, site-level expectations remain unclear, leaving outcomes related to community, geology, ecology, or history undefined.
This project is a finalist for a 2019 RIBA President’s Award for Research. (Confidential) The project was disseminated within a public realm. Exhibit openings and discussions were held at each of the three exhibitions, and were aimed at a body of professionals and academics in the field.
The version of the exhibition held in Guangzhou was curated by a well-regarded art institution (the Fei Museum) and was reviewed in local press. In addition to exhibitions, the research appeared in conference papers, talks, and journal articles.
