Joyful Trees (Arbores Laetae)

Valeche Studio was the landscape architect for this animated art installation consisting of 13 still and 3 spinning Chinese Junipers designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The trees, tilted, trimmed, and rotating, challenge the precedent of the static ornamental garden to create a more interactive and constantly changing urban landscape spectacle. The trees were selected from among hundreds across 7 nurseries in Guangdong province, were selected for their matching uniformity. Over the course of the three-year installation, the trees will gradually deform to reveal the varied cumulative climatic pressures impacting this typical open space site in Hong Kong.
