NAN AN ZUI PARK 武汉南岸嘴公园

The development of the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art and Beijing’s 798 district are closely intertwined. From a former weapons factory, 798 gained momentum as an art district during the 90s owing to its large industrial spaces and affordable rent. As UCCA opened its doors in 2007 to the public, the development surge in China had brought new money and international interest to the area. The buildings were fully refurbished and a series of subsequent renovations have morphed the building into an ad hoc assembly of disparate uses and opportunistic design decisions.

Responding to the architectural design by OMA, the landscape design links interior and exterior through a color gradient in typical floor pavers, connecting the site to its surroundings while clearly demarcating UCCA’s forecourt as a public space.

Each blocks contain individual textures and colors. Both planting and furniture plans to accommodate healthy plant growth and clear zones of activity in the public realm. The 5 main blocks are, ginkgo star-way, summer snow station, entrance zone, red wood cafe and aspen forest. Each block shines in a specific season, giving visitors a fresh look every season.

During summer, the entire streetscape is covered with lush green, the Summer snow station in particular, takes the spotlight. Magnolia trees shines, with showy white flowers covering the entire tree.

In Autumn, both Ginkgo tree and Aspen tree feature bright yellow autumn foliage, contrasting the reds of the facade in the foreground.

In Winter, dense low stalks of red-twigged dogwood were revealed, the snow-white straight trunks of the aspen cluster were also exposed. Giving visitors a sense of funkiness in the coolest time of the year.

The streetscape design works in harmony with the architecture and with Beijing’s climate, exaggerating its characteristic colors and forms. Trees were selected for good growth, and with clear trunks high enough to allow open views from street to building and accommodate seating and movement at the sidewalk. Strong, open-branched ginkgo anchor the sidewalk at the museum shop; bright-leafed spreading pears frame the entry; showy, red-twigged dogwoods embrace the outdoor café; a clump of birch with their rustling leaves and white trunks screen the west edge of the site.

Furniture were positioned to take advantage of the shadows casted by the trees and architecture. Cafe tables were carefully arranged to maximize seating space while still maintaining a comfortable spacing in between.

街景设计与建筑及北京的气候和谐相映,强调其鲜明的色彩和形态。被选用的树木能于该气候良好生长,且有一定的高度以容许行人从街道看到建筑物的外墙设计。艺术中心商店外有坚挺的银杏树,在人口处有明亮树荫的丁香,艳丽的红瑞木包围着咖啡厅,而在场地西边有笔直树干的白杨树林沙沙作响。

每个区的纹理和颜色排列都不一样。 5个主要区域分别是银星道,白夏站,入口区,红瑞茶坐和白杨林。每个街区都在特定的季节发光,使游客在每个季节来到均有焕然一新的感觉。
