GATHERING FLOWS: A CONFLUENCE OF CULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FUTURES

We are inspired by the mangrove as efficient architecture and productive landscape. With GATHERING FLOWS, we aim to partner with these existing natural ecology to build a new active and green public realm that regenerates the local urban environment and activates nearby communities through adaptive, flexible, and productive architectural and landscape strategies. Our design emerges at the intersection of varied urban networks and engages the flows that move through and across the site.

Mangrove wetlands are highly productive and bio-diverse ecosystems that thrive in the ebb and flow of their dynamic environments. Mangroves are the engineers that bring balance to their ecosystems by stabilizing soils, filtering sediments and pollutants, protecting upland habitats and connecting terrestrial fresh waters with marine waters.

Our proposal aims to foster a new culture of stewardship for the protection and understanding of coastal ecological resources and to facilitate improved connections between the city, nature, and the waterfront.

The final effect will be an iconic building that merges with its artificial topography, generating a space that allows a new perspective on the bay and its mangroves. GATHERING FLOWS is an urban mangrove; interconnected with its surrounding flows, rooted to its earthen substrates, and allowing a rich cultural ecosystem to thrive within its structures and among its canopy.
